I suffer from a condition called inclusion body myositis which is a progressive condition causing profound muscle weakness.
For well over 3 years I sat in a chair looking out of the window and watching the television, walking with help a short distance to go to the toilet and back. Some 3 ½ years ago, I fell and broke my knee cap and I have not walked since. After a hospital stay that lasted 11 weeks, 6 months later I obtained a Genie Wheelchair and my life changed completely.
One of the reasons that I never left the house was that I was afraid that I would need the toilet but the commode facility on the chair meant that I was liberated. I now go shopping in the local town and with the hoist facilities for both myself, and the chair fitted in my car, I can travel even further afield.
In the year 2000 I started to study for a degree with the Open University but after 4 years as my condition worsened and the death of my brother, I gave up. I could not concentrate and study was beyond me. It wasn’t until I had my Genie Wheelchair for 6 months that I was emotionally in the right place to complete the two years’ study required for my honours degree, which I did last year when I was awarded an upper 2nd degree in humanities specialising in classical studies. I couldn’t have done it without my wonderful carers, or my wonderful Genie Wheelchair. I was probably the proudest graduate there when I went on stage to collect my certificate in my wonderful Genie Wheelchair.
Thank you all for what you have done for me, particularly Paul who is always kind and patient, and Phil for your kindness and understanding.
